Much of the island was accessible by car as we moved toward low tide on Tuesday afternoon, October 30, 2012. The Gardens, with the exception of E. Atlantic Blvd, Gull Road, Beach Road and Morningside Road was draining well. In the north end, water and huge amounts of sand were blocking street ends along the boardwalk, and Corinthian was impassible in part. The bay front was draining, Ninth Street was passable and the Rte 52 Causeway beckoned. Few tried the bridge, as all had been warned that if they left, they would not be allowed to return.
Asbury Ave and streets to the east were generally passable, although the streets were full of debris, sand drifts, downed wires (mostly cable wires) and a few fallen trees. West Ave had intermittent flooding, and all of the usual low spots between there and Bay Avenue were still underwater. These images do not tell a comprehensive story but perhaps shed some light on what had happened in various areas.
